Beyonce gave an electric performance at the Inauguration on Monday, singing the National Anthem to rave reviews. But now, the U.S. Marine Corps band that backed her up claims she may have lip-synced.
A spokeswoman for the band told media sources that Beyonce lip-synced her performance, and were asked to pretend to play their instruments for the National Anthem.
However, a different spokesperson later refuted that report, claiming that while the band did not play live, they have no way of knowing if Beyonce lip-synced or sang live.
It is standard procedure for live events for musicians to pre-record their music, and if Beyonce lip-synced it would not be the first time that a high-profile national anthem was actually a pre-recorded track. But the performance quickly went viral, and the news that it may have been canned would certainly be a surprise.
